Most expensive house in the UK

Attempting to determine the most expensive house in the UK, or indeed the world, is always going to be difficult.

We can look at houses that have remained in the same ownership for years and attempt to estimate their value. We can look at recent sales. We can look at houses currently for sale.

I will tackle the first two of these in future posts, but right now I want to write about the highest priced house currently advertised as being for sale.

At the time of writing, the luxury mansion with the highest asking price is Updown Court. This is for sale through Savills for a cool £70 million! Whether it is actually worth this money is debatable, especially as it has been on the market for several years at this price! But this is without doubt the most expensive house for sale in the UK.

So lets see what you get for your money.

Set in grounds of 58 acres, including 11 acres of landscaped gardens, this mansion has 7 reception rooms, 24 bedrooms and 23 bathrooms. Suitable for a small family then. You don't own a property like this and run it yourself, so of course there is the staff accomodation in two separate houses and an estate office.

The house is approached through ornate gates, and up a marble driveway that is actually heated! You park your car in an underground car park with room for 8 vehicles.

The owners obviously enjoy their swimming as there are 5 swimming pools, one of which is a 12 metre pool accessed by a glass lift direct from the master bedroom.

This extravagantly opulent house, covering 50,000 sq ft over 4 floors, includes a very grand triple-height entrance hall, and a banqueting hall. There is plenty to keep guests entertained, with a bowling alley, a gymnasium, a private cinema and a squash court.

The leisure theme continues outside, with the inclusion of an all-weather tennis court and stable block, with access to bridleways. A true horse enthusiast would want a menage, but there's plenty of space to build one.

It is obvious that no expense has been spared in fitting out this home, and whether or not you consider it all a bit tasteless, there is no doubt that this is a very impressive house.
