This show condition Ferrari 250 Testarossa has just beaten the world record for bid price at an auction.

Built in 1957, this is one of Ferrari's most successful racing cars. It was entered into 19 races between 1958 and 1961 winning 10 of them.

Initially finished in white, then red, then black with red nose, then white again. It was finally resprayed back to the current black with red nose.

The 2,953cc single overhead cam V12 engine produces 300bhp at 7,200rpm. The cylinder head is painted bright red, which is why these cars were named Testarossa. It means "Red Head" in Italian.

The sale was made on May 17th 2009 by RM Auctions at the "Leggenda e Passione" in the Ferrari factory in Maranello. A bidding war ensued, helping to push the price up to 9,020,000 euros, and it was won by a mystery telephone bidder.

This has beaten the previous record from the same auction in 2008, when a Ferrari 250GT California Spyder was bought by Chris Evans.
