Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic

The Williamson Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic has just broken the record for the world's most expensive car; a record that keeps on getting broken.

Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic

When a car is ahead of its time, both in terms of its unforgettable appearance and its technical design. When that car survives for over 70 years in immaculate condition and, most importantly, is one of only 2 remaining; it is understandable that it might be worth a few quid.

This was definitely the case for this classic Bugatti, just sold by the estate of the late Dr. Peter Williamson for an undisclosed price, but certainly in the region of $30 - $40 million. This means that at the time of writing (May 2010) this is way ahead of the second most expensive car ever sold.

The rarity is helped by the fact that only 4 were made, and the other is in a private collection owned by Ralph Lauren. This meant that this was the only realistic opportunity to buy one, and is probably the main reason for the high price.

Of course, it is in the very nature of things that these records keep getting broken, and I wonder how long it will be before another classic car is sold for even more money. When that occurs I will update this post. Subscribe to my RSS feed or newsletter to be one of the first to hear when that eventually happens.
