Bill Gates Mansion

Bill Gates mansion mixes modern facilities with a design that blends with its environment. This post looks at some of its features.

Bill Gates Mansion

Bill Gates house is not what you would call modest! Measuring 66,000 square feet it sits in 5 acres of land on a hill overlooking Lake Washington, occupying 500 feet of prime waterfront. It actually looks smaller than that, as a large percentage has been built into the hill itself.

The architect, James Cutler, designed the property to blend in with its environment, with extensive use of wooden beams and panels throughout.

This gives the house an appearance similar to a lodge, albeit a very big one!

As with a lot of billionaires' homes the exact specifications are not easy to discover, but the details below are correct to the best of my knowledge.

The house is split over 4 levels and has 7 bedrooms, 6 living rooms and 6 kitchens. There is a large private library with a domed reading room. Bill Gates purchased a collection of scientific writings by Leonardo da Vinci in 1994 (for $30.8 million) and it is reported that these are kept in the library.

The swimming pool measures 17x60 feet, and reportedly has an underwater music system. There is also a sauna, a trampoline, and further sports facilities outdoors. A 20 seat cinema with state of the art equipment rounds off the entertainment facilities.

And what about security? After all, the location of Bill Gates mansion is very well known (and the exact address has been published on some websites!) so you would expect security to be a priority. Guests are provided with a micro-chip upon arrival so that their exact location is known at all times. There are sensors throughout, and as well as enhancing security, this has an additional advantage. It means that lights switch on and off as people walk from room to room, and other environmental parameters such as temperature and background music can be tailored to each individual.

And what is it worth? Current estimates lie somewhere between $150 million and $200 million.
